Update and a funny story….

Well after yesterdays chaos, Syd seems better today. She still seems a little tired, but good all around. I think she’ll be fine, just had an upset tummy. Well thought you’d all like to know that.

So onto the funny story…

When Syd was about eight months old I decided she had proved herself enough to be trusted at the dogpark. So we walked, quite slowly, the longish walk there. The walk was quite fun, Syd was in a good mood, playing tug-of-war with me using the leash and practically bouncing the entire way there. After that perilous walk we finally made it.
I let Syd off the leash in the lake area, and she stood nearby not knowing what to about the other dogs coming at her. Eventually my golden retriever decided to roll on her back and pee herself under that crazy eyed stare of a chihuahua (truthfully I don’t blame her) That was the day that I found out my dog was truly a wimp, but it’s not her fault.

That’s how it went for a while, other dogs coming to say hi to Syd, and her rolling over, or tucking her tail between her legs as far as it could go. A HUGE dog (like I was even kind of intimidated) came over to sniff her, and well she froze. I have never seen her more still in her life.  Her brown eyes were as wide as they could go, and she looked like she might just pass out from being so stiff. Of course that dog did nothing to her, he just wanted to play. But Syd just stood there like a statue, scared out of her mind.

Later that day, I was trying to get her to take a swim in the lake, I mean Goldens are supposed to love to swim. I just couldn’t get her to go anywhere where she couldn’t stand. I think she doesn’t like when her head gets wet, but she eats rain (yes EATS it, I will upload a video of this next time it rains)  and gets her entire body soaked, so I am pretty confused on that front. Anyway we were on the dock (yes our dogpark has a dock thingy) and she was just kind of sitting there staring at the water, I decided it was time to leave, and gave her one last encouragement to jump in.

At that encouragement, she leaned over the edge of the dock, got into that doggy play stance and jumped/fell headfirst into the lake. She went completely under, and I panicked for just I second, because I couldn’t see her. Then she broke the surface, doggy paddling like her life depended on it. She was panicking too, I think she thought the water was shallow, that’s why she probably jumped in. I reached down, grabbed her collar and pulled my soaked dog back to dryish land.

After I got her up, she gave me one of those “Can we do it again!!??” looks, and I told her she was a dork, and took her back home. The funny thing was she was dry when I got her home. She almost completely dried in fifteen mins of walking, now she is my “Quick-Dry Dog” She still isn’t to sure about the dog park, she’s much better though. I think it will just take time.

So here’s your mission (yes a mission): Post any stories you have about the dog park, or something your dog love and hates (like Syd with getting her head wet and the rain)! Thanks for reading! You all are the best!
